Natural makeup tutorial
The goal of natural makeup isn't to look made up — it's to look well rested. Little product, right placement: a soft everyday face in about 10 minutes.
What you'll need
- Moisturizer and sunscreen
- A light skin tint or BB cream
- Concealer
- Clear brow gel
- Brown or black mascara
- Cream blush
- Tinted lip balm or a nude lipstick
Step by step
Moisturize
Apply moisturizer and sunscreen and give them a minute or two. In natural makeup your own skin shows, and hydrated skin looks more alive.
Even out only the center
Apply the skin tint to the center of your face — beside your nose, on your chin and the middle of your forehead — and thin it outward with your fingers. You don't need to take it to the edges.
Spot-conceal
Dot concealer only on the inner corners under your eyes and on any redness, then tap it in with your ring finger.
Brush up your brows
Comb your brows upward and slightly outward with clear gel. They look full and groomed, not drawn on.
One coat of mascara
Keep your eye open and look slightly down; wiggle the mascara from the lash base to the tips in one coat. A second coat breaks the natural effect.
Press in cream blush with your fingers
Put a little on the fullest part of your cheek and press it out toward your temple with your fingertips. Cream blush melts into skin, so it looks like it's coming from within.
Tip: Choose the shade by undertone: peach for warm, rose for cool, dusty rose for neutral, terracotta for olive.
Color your lips
Tap tinted balm or nude lipstick onto the center of your lips with a finger and blur it outward — no sharp edges.
Natural shades that suit you
With so little color, the right shade is everything. If you don't know your undertone, take the skin undertone test; to see your whole palette, take the color analysis quiz.
Common mistakes
- Applying skin product heavily all over: in natural makeup it only goes where you need it.
- Drawing brows on hard with a pencil: gel and a few hair strokes look more natural.
- Two or three coats of mascara: lashes clump and the effect is lost.
- Powder blush on bare skin: it can look patchy. Cream blushes blend more easily here.
FAQ
Is natural makeup the same as everyday makeup?
Mostly, yes: both even out the skin and add life with little product. Natural makeup aims to look even more like no makeup at all.
Can you do natural makeup without foundation?
Yes. If your skin is fairly even, conceal only where needed, then finish with cream blush and mascara.
What lipstick color is best for natural makeup?
One or two shades deeper than your natural lip color. Peachy and coral nudes suit warm undertones, rose pinks suit cool, dusty rose suits neutral.
